Cross
(Click on any picture to view the larger detailed picture.)

As a gift for a close friend of mine, I made a wooden cross. I chose a hardwood from South America
called bloodwood for the base. It has a deep rich rose color and is very dense (heavy) and a tight grain.
I thought it an appropriate wood for the theme. The heart of the cross is made of myrtlewood, native
only to Southwest Oregon and Northwest California. (Note: This is the same type of wood used for the
railroad tie in which the golden spike was driven in the ceremony to commemorate the completion of
the First Transcontinental Railroad on May 10, 1869 at Promontory Summit, Utah.) The piece is
finished with several coats of natural imported carnauba wax from Brazil.
