Dec 6, 2008 - Asheville, North Carolina

via the Blue Ridge Parkway (BRP)

Start of day: 39077
End of day: 39359
Day Total: 282 miles
Total Trip: 1088 miles
States: (8) Massachusetts, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina
Gas Prices: $1.77 in Glendale Springs, NC

After a short nights rest, I navigated my way back to the BRP at the south end of the road closure I encountered
the night before. I got back on the Parkway at mile marker 136 and headed south. It was overcast and cold, which
doesn't look good for taking photos. I did notice that the wildlife were still out in force. I saw at least 30 more deer,
20 more turkeys, one herd was 10 strong, (I know it should be a flock, but these birds were big enough to be in a
herd!) and a little racoon. At approximately mile marker 216 I crossed the North Carolina border.

Without the sign...

Mahogany Rock Overlook. It was cold, about 26 degrees.

Halfway thru the BRP

This mile marker indicated that I was halfway thru the Parkway.

Devil's Garden Overlook

It was getting ready to snow.

Ice Sculptures

This was a WOW! moment. Awesome!

Typical road before me

Common view of fence lined road near the plateaus.

Price Lake

Price Lake. The snow has barely accumulated on the frozen part
of the lake.

Eastern Continental Divide

I've seen the Central Continental Divide many times, this is the first
that I recall seeing the Eastern one.

Road Closed

And the @#$! Road Closed sign - again.

At mile marker 285 I had to get off the Parkway. I was able to get back
on at mile marker 292 - only 7 miles later. However, just 7 miles again
later at mile marker 299, I had to get off again - and didn't get back on!
I followed the detour South sign down Rt. 221 and made several attempts
to get back on, finding the Road Closed signs again. The last being near
the Museum of North Carolina Minerals at mile marker 332, before
continuing to follow the detour South signs toward Marion, NC. Then
on Interstate 40 South to Asheville, NC, where the detour sign say I
can get back on near mile marker 383. So I stopped for the night and
will attempt to find out in the morning. But that's 98 miles of Parkway
I won't get to drive. I believe that's enough for me to now consider that
I "have not" driven the entire length of the Blue Ridge Parkway.

Bummer...
