Eastern Oregon

October 26, 2009
Returning from a dart tournament at Kennewick, WA I decided to take the scenic way home
rather than along the Columbia River to Portland then south to Lebanon. I headed south on State
Highway 19 out of Arlington (John Day Highway) to Fossil, then west on 218 and 97 toward
Redmond eventually cutting over to 126 and 20 into Lebanon.

Somewhere near Condon, OR. There was a lot of open range and
fields along the rolling hills.

Looking southeast from the road.

Same place looking northeast.

Wind farm. I saw many of these along the way. These wind
turbines are 240 feet tall! I saw some much closer to the road
but didn't stop to take a picture.

Coming out of the hills south of Fossil.

Near the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument,
Clarno Unit, west of Fossil.

"These pillars of mud preserve the remains of brontotheres, creodonts,
palm trees and bananas." Brontotheres are like rhinos.

In Terrebonne, OR, the Crooked River Gorge is spanned by three
bridges.

This is the old bridge no longer used. You can see the new bridge
behind it.

The new bridge information.

The new bridge 300 feet above the river.

This is the Oregon Trunk Railroad bridge maybe
300 yards southwest.

... her scenic beauty.

View of the river 300 feet directly above it overlooking the
cliff.

Close up of the Oregon Trunk Railroad Bridge.

Looking back toward the old bridge along the
retaining wall.

East of the railroad bridge the gorge continues on...

On US Route 20 Santiam Highway, Santiam Pass at 4,817 feet. The outside
temperature was 34 degrees, down from the high 40's near Sisters, OR. It
rose back up to the low 50's as I neared Sweet Home, OR, elevation 537 feet.
