The entrance to Ruby Falls (parking lot that is.)
Here's the vertical tunnel cut to allow visitors to the falls. Originally,
Lambert, the guy who owned the place was digging to a different cavern
400ft deep. This one was found at 260 feet deep. He crawled 650 feet
before he found a place large enough to stand up. An elevator takes
visitors to this level.
Following the original tunnel a manmade path was cut.
A formation named Catus and Candle. One of the few formations
visitors could touch without being fined $500.
Above the path - Totem Pole.
One of the side paths cut that didn't follow the original tunnel. I was
one of seven tourists on this tour.
A formation named "The North end of a Southbound Donkey."
Colored lights added for effect.
Oynx Column, an active formation, not supposed to touch.
Mirror Pool - cool!
Hall of Dreams. Formations near the ceiling difficult to see.
Leaning Tower.
Looking up at the ceiling.
Beehives.
Thin formations, again difficult to see.
Tobacco Leaves - they have a name for everything.
It's all really flowstone.
First look at Ruby Falls, named after Lambert's wife, Ruby. When
we entered there was no lights, some inspirational music played, then
the lights came on.
160 feet high I believe...
Over time the falls have cut away the rock at the basin and you could
walk behind the falls and look straight up under them. This was the
only shot I got because my lens got wet from the spray.
Time exposure photo. A speaker is seen to the right.
Again, but with changing color. Pretty Awesome!
Last one out, shut off the lights....
